Help us Establish Smiths Creek Wildlife Sanctuary!
October 12, 2024
Orenda Wildlife Land Trust has the opportunity to acquire an ecologically important 5.5-acre property on Smiths Creek, a major tributary to the Barnstable Great Marsh in West Barnstable!
This acquisition will prevent the property from being developed, which will serve to protect critical habitat and the wildlife species which reside there, and will also continue the decades-long effort to preserve this major Cape Cod Bay embayment, which includes Sandy Neck.
As you may know, Orenda already owns several wildlife sanctuaries in West Barnstable, including the Margaret Wyman “Turtle Garden” Sanctuary, where we facilitate our Diamondback Terrapin Protection Program, managing critical nesting habitat for the threatened species.
By establishing the Smiths Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, we will:
permanently protect wildlife, including the saltmarsh sparrow, which is rapidly disappearing as the salt marshes where they nest are being destroyed by coastal development and sea level rise;
maintain native habitats in danger of vanishing from Barnstable;
preserve scenic and historical landscapes;
enhance wildlife corridors and prevent fragmentation of habitats;
protect coastal water quality and combat the effects of climate change.
We are now actively fundraising to reach our goal of securing $100,000 in private funds for this acquisition.
