Nalebuff Sanctuary
Nalebuff Sanctuary, Falmouth, Half Acre – 1996
This more than half-acre property with oak and pine trees is on a small peninsula in the Waquoit area of Falmouth, in an otherwise residential area bordering the Child’s River. The donors volunteered to act as stewards for this sanctuary, which is across the street from their home. They gave Orenda a generous endowment to ensure that wildlife habitat will be protected here, and for enhancements like birdhouses. The slightly rolling land includes natural ground cover, scrub oak and pine tree vegetation. There’s also a public boat landing located within the neighborhood. The Nalebuffs agreed to act as volunteer stewards. They remove litter, debris and storm-damaged trees. In consultation with Orenda, The Nalebuffs enhance the habitat for bird nesting, roosting or feeding, including the occasional installation of bird houses. When they donated the property in 1996, the Nalebuffs also provided $1000 to Orenda for the purpose of maintaining the property in its natural state.
