Begin the new year with intention, reflection, and a deeper connection to the land. Join Orenda Wildlife Land Trust for First Day Hikes 2026, as we embark on a gentle guided walk that weaves together nature observation, storytelling, and simple journaling prompts designed to help you slow down and truly immerse yourself in the winter landscape.

Event Overview:

Orenda Wildlife Land Trust invites their First Day Hikes 2026 participants to experience nature with intention. Guided by Orenda’s Executive Vice President, nature writer and educator Meghan Douglas Hill and Jane Ounanian, Orenda’s Office Administrator and “nature nuance” specialist, you’ll explore two of Orenda’s pristine West Barnstable sanctuaries, offering breathtaking views of Barnstable Great Marsh. Together, we will traverse the land at a relaxed pace, pausing to observe, listen, and reflect on the subtle “glimmers” that define winter in nature, on Cape Cod.

Throughout the walk, Meghan and Jane will share Orenda’s mission and impact and offer gentle prompts to help you tune in to the landscape — the shift of light across the marsh, the quiet winter bird activity, the patterns and tracks left in the terrain, and the textures, scents, and sounds that define this time of year.

Participants who wish to can bring a small notebook and pencil or pick up one of Orenda’s simple nature journaling kits available on-site.

Why Observation Matters:

A central theme of this year’s hike is the practice of intentional observation — noticing what’s often overlooked and fostering a deeper relationship with the land we steward.

Observation in nature provides meaningful benefits:

  • Deepens awareness and understanding. Careful attention reveals how the ecosystem functions — tides shifting, wildlife moving, plants enduring winter — and highlights the interconnections that sustain habitat health.
  • Supports personal wellbeing. Observing the natural world and its “glimmers” has been shown to reduce stress, support mindfulness, and restore mental clarity. A slow, attentive walk can set a grounded tone for the year ahead.
  • Strengthens stewardship. When we truly see a landscape — its fragility, resilience, and rhythms — our sense of care for it naturally grows. Observation fosters appreciation, and appreciation fosters protection.
  • Invites curiosity and reflection. Small discoveries — a track, a feather, shifting ice, the arc of a hawk — tell stories of life around us and inspire reflection that’s easy to capture in a simple nature journal.

This gentle practice transforms a short winter walk into a meaningful experience.
